Our Population

The Santomean people is divided into 3 main linguistic groups: Forro, Angolar and Lingwa-iye The language, as a rule, also defines ethnicity. The unifying element though, is Creole.

  • 0-14 years: approximately 40%

  • 15-64 years: around 56%

  • 65 years and over: about 4%

Origin:
The Santomean population is a mixture of descendents of Portuguese, Angolans, Congolese, Mozambicans, Cape Verdians, Brazilians and many other nations.

Recently there has also been immigration from Cuba, China, the former Soviet Union, the Philippines as well as the European countries. The result is a beautifully mixed people, representing the whole palette of possible tans, with predomination of mulattos.
